You are looking at a true legend of poker and without a doubt one of the most successful poker players who has ever lived. Doyle Brunson has been making a living on poker before most people even got to know Texas Hold’em, Omaha or even 7 Card Stud. He holds ten World Championship bracelets and has won hundreds of tournaments, ranging from local Dallas based competitions to massive World Series of Poker games. Before Doyle Brunson became a world famous celebrity, he was a promising basketball player who grew up in Longworth, Texas. He was drafted by the NBA team Minneapolis Lakers, but an unfortunate knee injury put and end to his dreams of becoming a professional. This unfortunate event forced him back to the desk at the Simmons University in Abilene. Bills had to be paid and as he began looking for a job, he instead found poker to be a new way of making money. Instead of a job at a bar, Doyle went from town to town on his spare time and participated in as many tournaments and heads-up games he could find. After school, he was offered a job but quit shortly after he noticed that poker would give him a larger income. Doyle moved to Texas in the 1960s, looking for high stake cash games. He made friends with Amarillo Slim, also a poker legend who was keen on gambling about everything. They set out on long trips to gamble about virtually everything possible. Their obsession was also their daytime job, and they could tell that they were doing it well. Meanwhile, card games became more important as it became increasingly popular in the United States. In 1976, Doyle submitted the buy-in fee for the World Series of Poker. This attempt proved to be a success and Doyle scored the largest prize pot holding 10-2. The following year, Doyle once again showed what he was capable of and won the second consequent WSOP competition. And again, he was holding 10-2 at the final table. Although the victory was big news, his winning hand received more attention than the actual win. Today, people relate these cards as the Doyle Brunson Hand. Following his great success in ’76 and ’77, Doyle released his first book on poker, which later became a must read bible for every poker player – professionals included. Super/System was a complete guide to the world of Texas Hold’em among other card games with strategy input that has intrigued and influenced many of today’s professionals. Doyle has since then updated the book with contributions from other poker professionals. It goes under the name Super/System 2. Doyle Brunson still remains a very active player. He participated in many of the major tournaments in 2005 and earned respect from everyone who faced him. As technology has improved, Doyle has learnt to play poker on the internet. He is a co-owner of Doyles Room, an online poker room. You will be able to find him at the really high cash tables and sometimes in tournaments as well. But if you face him, make sure to bluff wisely and read his book first, otherwise you may lose a few more bucks than expected. |
